Preventative dentistry includes engaging in good at-home hygiene routines, educating your children on proper oral hygiene techniques, and getting a preventative dental exam and professional cleaning at least twice a year.

What does the dentist do during an exam?

The dentist will examine your teeth and mouth for any signs of disease or decay. Your dentist may want to take x-rays to determine if any problem could be developing that can’t be seen by a visual examination as well as to create a treatment plan should you need any further dental care.

Why are dental cleanings important?

Dental cleanings are an essential preventative treatment that helps to keep your smile healthy. Your hygienist will clean your teeth by removing plaque and dental calculus, polish and floss your teeth and examine your smile for signs of gum disease.

Does my child also require bi-annual cleanings and check-ups?

Preventative dentistry is equally as crucial for children as it is for adults. Bi-annual check-ups allow your child’s dentist to monitor their oral development and address issues like thumb-sucking and misaligned teeth.

Children’s teeth aren’t as strong as an adult’s so topical fluoride treatments can help remineralise their tooth enamel.

Dental sealants are a non-invasive treatment that is applied to newly erupted adult premolars and molars to prevent cavities.
