Good dental hygiene will significantly reduce the odds of suffering from tooth decay or gum disease.

If you do not practice good dental hygiene, you can increase your risk for other health problems such as cardiovascular disease and Alzheimer’s. Good oral healthcare consists of two parts: brushing and flossing at home at least twice a day and visiting your dentist twice a year for a professional cleaning and check-up.

Is there anything I can do besides brushing and flossing to improve my dental hygiene?

Bad habits contribute to poor oral hygiene. Avoid consuming sugary and sticky foods, using tobacco products, and drinking too much alcohol if you want to improve your oral health.

How do I maintain oral hygiene between dental hygiene appointments?

  • Brush your teeth at least twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste
  • Floss or use an interdental aid or Waterpik® at least once a day
  • Chew sugar-free gum to increase saliva production to help wash away bacteria
  • Drink lots of water to wash away bacteria and food debris
