We try to educate children and help them develop good oral healthcare habits that will last a lifetime. We encourage children to join our NHS service. Due to limited availability, we ask that adults join our practice plan service.
When should I bring my child in for their first visit?
We encourage parents to bring their child in for their first visit once they have their milk teeth, anywhere from 6-12 months. The dentist can exam your child and have a good baseline to monitor the development of the child’s teeth. Your child should see the dentist at least twice a year.
Is there anything I can do as a parent to help protect my child’s teeth?
Start developing good oral health habits early. Limit sugary snacks and drinks. Ensure your child brushes their teeth twice daily. Make it a habit by setting the times: Perhaps after breakfast and before bed. When they are babies wipe their gums with a soft cloth. When they are toddlers, place a small amount of fluoride toothpaste on a soft-bristled child’s toothbrush and gently brush all the surfaces of their teeth.
By age 7, your child can brush their own teeth under your supervision. After age 10, the child will have matured enough to properly brush alone.
What are the most common dental problems faced by children?
Children commonly suffer from tooth decay and cavities. Genetics or thumb-sucking may cause misaligned teeth, necessitating braces once their adult teeth have erupted.
What about dental sealants?
Dental sealants help protect a child’s teeth from cavities. A child, despite our best intentions, may not brush properly, especially molars, as we can’t always supervise them when they clean their teeth. Children tend to eat more sugary snacks, which increase the chances of cavities. A dental sealant can provide not only a protective barrier again bacteria, but also provide an easier surface for cleaning.
